According to their tradition, Vietnameses
practise three religions: Buddhism, Confucianism and Taoism, under the reign of
all the feudal dynasties, these three religions were in same principle. From
17th century, Catholicism (10% of the population) was introduced in Vietnam,
and quickly, this religion became a principal religion in the littoral
communities or riversides while following the steps of the missionaries.
Protestantism (400 thousands faithfuls) is practised primarily in the Central
high-land by the minorities. Islam is a specific religion of Cham community. Religions born in Vietnam such as: Caodaisme and the sect of HoaHao Buddhism
are considered as the syntheses of the doctrines. Above all others, Vietnameses
practise the ancestor’s worship. The altar for the ancestors is indispensible
in each family. The death’s anniversary of a member in the family is regarded
as the most important day. More than 70% of the population of Vietnam are the
believers of the Buddhism, Mahayana (Large Vehicle) in the Northern or Théravada
(Small Vehicle) in the Southern and in the Central. This religion has a great
influence on the others, therefore, it is easy to understand, why, in Vietnam
there is no competition between the religions. In the spiritual life of the
Vietnameses, the beliefs like: Holly Mother worships , heroes worships are also
important.
